“Why can’t I just write this damn book?!”

I’ve heard so many people ask this, either explicitly or in the frustration in their voice. But, I don’t have the answer because the question isn’t logical.

If you needed help to rewire an outlet, would you be frustrated? What if you tried to make Gordon Ramsey’s famous wellington with no prior cooking experience? Would you be surprised that you struggled? Do you believe you could walk into a courtroom and represent yourself effectively and well?

Of course not.

Electricians, chefs, and lawyers need years and years of training to perfect their craft.

So do writers.

I get it. There’s something deceptive about writing. For some reason, we think we should be able to write, even if we have no training, time, or practice. And we feel weird hiring others to write for us—even if we don’t hesitate to hire trained professionals for other tasks.

But here’s the thing—the book isn’t going to write itself. And are you really going to write it? Or would it make more sense to hire someone to do it right, the same way you would if your pipes burst or your dog was sick?

I know what I would choose.

Here at DAS, we cultivate intellectual yet artistic writing on par with the New York Times Best Sellers list. If today is the day you finally write that manuscript, we’re here to help.
