I met with a client today to go over his outline. We’ve been working together for a couple of months at this point, having moved through the development stage on this interview-based project, so I had a good idea of what he was looking for. I even knew some of the book’s history.
But I didn’t realize how long he’d been thinking about this book.
He mentioned attending a major historical event twenty years ago and told me that, on the way to that event, he’d told his pastor, “Someday I’m going to write a book about my experiences.”
Twenty years ago.
Selfishly, I’m happy he waited so long. I wasn’t ghostwriting twenty years ago, and I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work on such a special book (truly, this book is beautiful).
But it made me think of something else, too. Yesterday, I met with a client who had just scored a huge business deal—a once-in-a-career kind of close. To say that the event makes the perfect climax for his book is a massive understatement. It’s the perfect pinnacle for his story.
If we’d started working together a year earlier, that event wouldn’t have made it.
Sometimes, things happen on their own time, when they’re supposed to happen. I realize that might be a little “woo woo,” but the longer I’m in the business—the more I get the privilege of hearing people’s most profound life experiences—the more I believe that things happen in their season.
We’ll never push you to sign on with us if it’s not the right time. When we’re ready, we’ll be here.
But I hope you’ll ask yourself—is now the season for your book?
